What Is FSSAI Registration?

FSSAI registration is a mandatory certification issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare) for every Food Business Operator — from home kitchens to large manufacturers. It confirms your business meets food safety and hygiene standards and allows legal manufacture, storage, distribution or sale of food.

Operating without a valid FSSAI license is a punishable offence

Under Section 63 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, running a food business without FSSAI registration can attract a penalty of up to ₹5,00,000 and imprisonment of up to 6 months. Marketplaces like Swiggy, Zomato and Amazon also require a valid FSSAI number before onboarding.

FSSAI License Categories & Government Fees

Category is decided by your annual turnover and the nature of your business activity, as per FoSCoS classification.

Category-wise Fee Structure Effective 1 April 2026

Yes. Any business that manufactures, stores, distributes or sells food — including home kitchens and cloud kitchens — must hold at least Basic FSSAI Registration once it starts commercial operations.

You can choose a validity period of 1 to 5 years at the time of application. We recommend the maximum available tenure to reduce renewal effort and cost over time.

Once you cross ₹12 lakh in annual turnover, you must upgrade to a State License. Under current FoSCoS rules, businesses that outgrow their category during the license term can transition to the next category without losing their existing license number.
